DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTIVIRUS AND INTERNET SECURITY

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANTIVIRUS AND INTERNET SECURITY

I don’t know how it happened but security vendors started branding their products as different levels of protection in the most confusing ways, one of the common terms you will hear is antivirus and internet security but not many people really understand the difference and some people like me use the term antivirus as a blanket term because people will understand me (sorry). One would assume that these words are both interchangeable and do the same thing, well that’s not the case. I will also explain how security vendors name their products.

WHAT IS ANTIVIRUS:

Antivirus is generally the most basic form of protection one can buy, antivirus will have different features depending on the vendor so you will have to check the box or feature set if you are comparing. I could write down an idea of what to expect in the box but they are all different, so i will say if you are price conscious and are looking for the most basic security an antivirus will do.

WHATS IS INTERNET SECURITY:

Internet Security is normally the more advanced of the two I would recommend Internet Security to everyone looking to protect their digital worlds (Windows, Mac, Iphone, Android and Tablets – everything!) it comes with the features antivirus has and then some often including web and email protection password managers and extra security for the user. It costs only a few dollars more.

OTHER VENDOR NAMES:

Some vendors have moved away from using the terms antivirus and internet security at all because of the confusion. Vendors might use the term premium, or maximum or total security and so on. If in doubt find a product matrix which shows the side by side comparison of the vendor’s product offering and yes sometimes vendors add features to their box which are not really features at all, almost like a motor bike with a feature for fresh air…

IN SUMMARY:

Antivirus is the most basic of the software products one can buy. Internet security is in most cases the best, some vendors will use their own terms and names so you might have to check the products side by side on the vendor website before you purchase. I recommend Internet security or the top level security to anyone who asks and it’s doesn’t cost much more and has a better protection level.
